Aspire

Nottingham City Council and Futures Advice, Skills and Employment have launched Aspire - a new initiative bringing together city businesses and schools to help inspire young people to prepare for their future careers.

Spearheaded by Nottingham City Council and delivered by Futures, primary and secondary school students will receive support from trained careers professionals and inspirational business representatives to help them raise their levels of achievement and aspiration, gain relevant employability skills and develop an understanding of the world of work.

A package of activities offered to schools will include:

  • enterprise days
  • interview skills days
  • industrial visits
  • classroom speakers
  • business mentoring

Drawing on Futures' extensive expertise in delivering high quality employability skills training, careers advice and guidance, Aspire builds on employability activity piloted in Nottingham schools last year.

Aspire will involve a number of city businesses. Key employers such as Boots, Laing O'Rourke, Siemens and BT have all contributed to the pilot employability workshops and it is hoped that more businesses will sign up.

Aspire offers businesses the opportunity to:

  • contribute directly to young people's education and training
  • help shape the attitudes of young people to work
  • involve staff in supervising and mentoring young people
  • better engage with the wider community
  • access a talent pool of local young people

Paul Southby, Chair of Invest in Nottingham, says: "I spend much of my time championing Nottingham as a key business destination. To be able to say to investors and businesses considering moving to Nottingham that we have an available workforce that has the right skills and focus is a very powerful message."

"Young people need support and guidance and we have a duty to nurture their skills and enthusiasm from which we will benefit from in the future. We need to harness their enthusiasm and start promoting what we, the employers, have got to offer them."

Activity in schools will begin in April this year. Schools or businesses interested in participating with Aspire should contact Ashreen Seethal, Business Engagement Adviser, Futures Advice, SkillsĀ and Employment tel. 0115 960 1546 or email aspire@futuresadvice.co.uk
