Starting a Business

In Business offers a range of resources to support and sign post you, whether you are exploring a business idea or looking to expand your business.

Prince's Trust Enterprise Scheme 18 to 30 and thinking of starting your own business?

Central Library hosts drop-in sessions run by The Prince's Trust for people aged 18 to 30, who are unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week and have a business idea. Find them on Floor 2 every Wednesday 1pm to 4pm.


The COBRA database covers an extensive range of topics and ideas related to starting up, running or supporting the development of small firms, including:

  • Practical how-to guides - including how to write a business plan, market your business or register a company name
  • Hundreds of small business ideas and business opportunity profiles
  • Information on legal issues and health and safety

Access to COBRA is free to library members. You can access it from home or at your local your local city library,

Registering Your Business

The following websites offer free advice on how to register your business:

  • www.start.biz/home.htm - free information, support and advice to help you identify the best structure for your new business and to register a company name or trademark
  • www.companieshouse.gov.uk - The official government register of UK companies, where you can complete online applications to register your new business

Company Information

InBusiness has access to Companies House Direct with information on registered companies.

Use our information to:

  • Find the names of directors or research the directorships of individuals
  • Obtain copies of annual reports and accounts
  • Obtain copies of documents companies have filed with Companies House. (some documents may be charged for)
